Ashley Wood/Coal Shaker Grate (Right Side). The shaker grate is an important part of your unit. Air passes through the bottom of the grate to the base of the fire. Rotating the handle position will agitate the coals, allowing ash to drop and air to reach the fire. It is important to inspect the grates periodically. If you notice that the grates are warping or show signs of deterioration, they should be replaced!

Instructional Notes

Shaker Grate Replacement: *(Instructions may vary from unit to unit)*

1.) Open the ash pan door.

2.) Pull the shaker frame and shaker grate forward and out of the unit (You may have more than one frame and grate. You may also have a remove the "Grate Cog" & "Cog retainer").

3.) Place the shaker frame on a flat surface and remove the shaker grate from the frame by sliding it out of the groves (If the grate or frame is warped it may be helpful to gently tap the grate with a hammer to dislodge it from the frame).

4.) Now grab your new shaker grate or frame and place the pieces together (Fit them together the same way the original pieces were previously installed).

5.) Slide the grate or grates back into position (It is important to make sure the grates are positioned correctly. Make sure that the long, narrow end of the grate faces you and that the first grate is pushed to the back of the unit. The grate will not work properly if it is installed backward). If you have two grates they should meet and connect in the middle.

6.) Before closing your ash pan door attach your shaker handle and make sure that the grates are able to move freely. Shut the ash pan door.

Troubleshooting Notes

-Shake the grates vigorously 1/2" from left to right to spill ashes into the ash pan (Do this at least once every 12 hours of operation).

-Rotation of the handle (5 o'clock to 7 o'clock) position will agitate coals and spill ashes into the ash pan. It is advisable for you to get familiar with the shaker grate operation before firing the unit!

-Empty the ash pan regularly. Do not allow ashes to build up to the grate. This could cause the grate to warp and burn out. In addition, you might spill the ashes when removing the pan.

-If you notice that the grates are warped they should be replaced!
