The ash pan allows you to remove excess ash that has fallen through the grates down into the bottom of the unit. It is important to inspect your ash pan on a regular basis. If the ash pan is bent, warped, or shows signs of heavy deterioration, it should be replaced!

Instructional Notes

-The ash pan can be accessed by opening the ash cleanout door at the bottom of the unit. The ash pan can be removed by simply lifting up and pulling forward (You should wear gloves during this step. The ash pan can stay hot for an extended period of time after the fire has gone out).

Troubleshooting Notes

ASH DISPOSAL:

-Keep the ashpit section of the unit free of excess ashes (Do not allow ashes to stack higher than the sides of the ash pan).

-Whenever the ashes accumulate to a depth of 3 to 4 inches in the firebox or ash pan the excess ash should be removed (Make sure the fire has burned down and the unit has cooled to the touch).

-Leave an ash bed approximately 1 inch deep on the firebox bottom to help maintain a hot charcoal bed.

- Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. The closed container of ashes should be placed on a noncombustible floor or on the ground, away from all combustible materials, pending final disposal. The ashes should be retained in the closed container until all cinders have thoroughly cooled.
