No, this part is ment for the inside of a pellet stove. It is entirely too small for the purpose that you are thinking to use it for. The heat deflector on fireplaces are ment to keep the heat away from combustible surfaces, like wood trim or the like. There are a few things to consider when comparing what your gas logs heat compared to your father's. Is the room similar in size, are the ceilings higher, are there well insulated walls and windows?
