Common Gas Fireplace Problems
Is your gas fireplace not starting? Or perhaps the flame doesn’t stay lit. Read on for more details about common fireplace problems and which gas fireplace parts could potentially be the problem.
- Fireplace not starting - If you find that your fireplace is not lighting, there could be a number of parts that are not functioning properly.
- Check your pilot light: If the pilot light is off, you can try reigniting it according to the manufacturer’s instruction manual. Sometimes a dirty pilot light may be the problem. Over time, soot and dirt may collect in the pilot light’s orifice making it difficult to light.
- Pilot lights that ignite but burn out quickly may indicate a problem with the thermocouple, which is the metal sensor that instructs the gas valve when to release gas.
- If your fire still won’t ignite - but the pilot light remains lit, the thermopile may be the culprit. The thermopile produces a small amount of electricity, just enough to open the gas valve once the fireplace is switched on.
- It’s always best to call a professional for help if you’re unsure or uncomfortable fixing a problem yourself. Ask to see whether the repair technician has experience and knowledge of your gas fireplace manufacturer.
Gas Stove and Fireplace Maintenance Tips
While gas stoves and fireplaces are low-maintenance, they still require a bit of love and care. One of the most common problems is having a dirty fireplace glass door. With use, the glass collects a hazy film which blocks the view of the flame. We carry a number of glass door cleaners that are specifically designed to remove build-up from gas fireplaces.
If you want to extend the life of your fireplace, experts recommend getting an annual fireplace inspection. Even clean-burning gas fireplaces develop soot over time. An annual inspection and cleaning ensure any minor repairs are fixed, and your fireplace remains safe for many years.
