A poorly burning fire, missed ignitions and pellet falling through the firepot are all signs of worn out or missing firepot springs. Continuing to run the unit may result in a 'CHECK ASHPAN' error.
On Mt Vernon AE units, if the auto-clean is not working, Items to check:
Check for a broken wire on the 10 pin connector: Replace harness if broken. (SRV7034-191)
Check the auto-clean motor. (#7034-020): Remove from the assembly and test the motor out of the assenbly
If all previous checks are good: Replace the springs
NOTE: The auto-clean system will cycle each time when the unit is unplugged and plugged back in.

Troubleshooting Notes
These springs are located on the armature structure inside the firebox for the burnpot bottom which is attached to the pull rod. These spring are here to provide up pressure to seat the bottom of the burn pot when the rod is pushed in. When these spring wear out or if they become missing, the stove will burn poorly and have very long timed out ignitions. Pellets will also fall through the bottom and burn in the ash pan area which is a safety concern.
