Description

Low Limit Proof of Fire Switch

Used on all Lennox pellet stoves and all Pre-Lennox Whitfield stove models.

This switch controls the stove out of the "STARTUP" mode and into the "RUN" mode. This switch also turns off the stove when the stove is cool after "SHUTDOWN" or if the stove runs out of fuel.

Note: This is not the OEM replacement part that uses the screw and fork type fasteners for the wire leads. This switch requires modifications to change the terminal disconnects at the wire ends from the fork-type to 1/4" female spades.

Instructional Notes

Instructions for Installing Low-Limit Switch XP3004-1, 12057601-AMP (140°F-20 low-limit switch): This switch uses 1/4" spade connectors at the switch. Previous OEM versions of this switch use fork terminals. The wires from your stove will need to be cut and fitted with 1/4" spade disconnects to use this switch which are not included.  Lennox: Elite Montage/ IHP IronStrike 32FS Whitfield: Advantage, Cascade, Legend, Quest, Renaissance or Prodigy II: To replace this switch, locate the side of the stove where the combustion blower is mounted. The switch is located on the exhaust blower housing. Make sure that your stove is unplugged. Using a flat head screw driver, loosen the two contact points for the wires and remove the two fork connectors. using a 1/4" socket wrench, remove the two hex screws that hold the switch to the housing. If your new switch does not have screws for connecting the wires, use the screws from the old switch. Install the new switch to the housing. Reconnect your wires. It does not matter which wire goes on which terminal. **Note: Not all Whitfield pellet stoves used a low-limit switch for detecting proof of fire: Profile 20, Profile 30, and Optima units made by Lennox used a "photo-eye", part # 14750404

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Notes

How Low-Limit Switch, part #XP3004-1, 12057601-AMP (140°F-20 lLow-Limit Switch) operates:

Switch should be a normally open circuit that closes at 140°F, opens again at fall in temp 140°F-20°F or 120°F. This switch is mounted in the air path of the exhaust and is commonly not malfunctioning but just dirty on the face of the switch. If your wire contacts wiggle a little on the switch, this may actually be okay and is common. A bad switch can be determined by heating the switch face directly with the flame of a match or lighter. After a moment you will hear the switch click. After you hear the click test the switch across the terminals for continuity. If there is no circuit present and you have determined that the switch face is over 140°F, replace the switch. Also, if the switch face is <140°F but still has a circuit, also replace the switch.

This is a F140-20 made from a ceramic material which is high-heat tolerant. Because it's normally open, it's most often referred to as a fan switch. At ambient room temperature this switch is normally open or OFF and needs to detect heat to CLOSE to allow power to flow through the circuit. The switch will close at 120 degrees to restore power and will return to it's normal state at 140 degrees to cut power automatically. Failure of this switch happens when it stops opening or closing at the designated temperature thresholds.

Enviro Ceramic Exhaust Low Limit Heat Sensor - 140 Degree: EF-010-AMP

Perfect fit, works as intended

The new low-limit switch fits directly in the space of the old one as expected. The electrical connections are of a different style, requiring the existing wires to be cut and crimped into new connectors - no big deal; if I remember correctly, the web site warned of this. Most importantly, the new switch works great and the pellet stove is now back in operation!
