Description

This is the updated 300-watt replacement igniter for Mt Vernon AE Stoves and Inserts and is also the standard igniter used in the Mt Vernon E2 and the Trekker series stoves and inserts.

Technical Bulletin - October 2011- A new service part igniter is currently available for Advanced Energy units (AE) in which the consumer burns pellet fuel only. This igniter is 300 watts, so it will stay cooler and last longer than the current 380 watt igniter, but it will not light other biomass fuels. Although all igniters do burn out, you will see improved performance with the 300 watt igniter. This igniter should not be used in any non-AE units. The part number for the 300 watt igniter is SRV7000-647. For consumers who prefer to maintain full multi-fuel functionality, replace a burned out igniter with the existing 380 watt igniter, part SRV7000-462. New units of the Mt. Vernon AE were ALWAYS shipped with the multi-fuel 380 watt igniter, even after the update. This new igniter is a service part option ONLY. The AE service firepot assembly (SRV7034- 072) is now replaced with SRV7034-072B. This new service firepot assembly is identical to the previous assembly, except the igniter will no longer be included.

Instructions

Install Instructions For Quadra-Fire Loop Igniter (300 watt): SRV7000-647-OEM

Follow proper shutdown procedures before attempting any work on your stove and unplug the unit once the stove has cooled.

  1. To access the igniter you will need to remove the ash drawer/pan
  2. The wire leads to the igniter are connected to the wire harness with 1/4 inch male / female spade connectors. These wires will pull forward approximately 4 to 5 inches (102 to127mm). Disconnect the spade connectors and remove the igniter from the chamber. Loosen the thumb screw and slide igniter out. Some older models may have a different style mounting screw.
  3. Install new igniter into the chamber and tighten the thumb screw. Re-connect the wires to the 2 leads with the spade connectors.
  4. Remove right side panel (if necessary) and pull wire leads back toward the rear of the appliance to take-up the 4 to 5 inches (102 to 127mm) previously pulled out. This will keep the wires out of the way of the ash drawer/pan. Double check that the igniter wires are clear of any movement, i.e. ash drawer/pan, fire pot cleaning rod, etc.
  5. Re-install the ash drawer/pan and side panel (if removed) and re-connect the power.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Manual for the Mt Vernon AE

Items to check:

  1. Check the igniter(SRV7000-462): *Check for continuity in the igniter (should get around 36 ohms) or apply direct power to it. (This is an AC component)
  2. Check the AC power supply harness (#7034-220): *Check for power or a broken connection.
  3. Check for power at the igniter harness (SRV7034-199): *Make sure all connections are good. *Check for continuity in the wire harness.
  4. Check for power at the control board (SRV7000-456): *Unplug the unit and restart. Make sure the wall control says “Startup”. *If power is not present, check the fuse or replace the control board.

NOTE: There is a 20mm 5 AMP fuse for the ignition circuit located inside the plastic shield of the mother board.

It is advisable to ALWAYS replace your door gasket when you are replacing an igniter. A leaking door gasket is often a contributing factor to igniter failure.

Troubleshooting Igniters:

Igniter failure can be verified on one of three ways. The easiest and most common way to see if the igniter is working is to start your stove or grill and visually look for the orange glow; however, some appliances do not have a visual way to do this, so you may have to physically feel around in the burn pot after the stove has been on for a few minutes to “feel” for heat being generated. If you can see the glow or can feel the heat from the igniter, chances are that the igniter is actually working. If this is the case, retry the startup process. Make sure your burn pot is seated correctly if it is removable. Make sure that your ash pan, door or hopper lid is closed as this will provide an airtight seal on the stove, which most igniters will require for proper ignition. If you still do not have any luck, give the stove a good cleaning, including the vent, and try again. If these attempts fail, further troubleshooting will be required, which leads us to the third method.

For this method, you will need a DMM (Digital Multi-Meter). Gain access to the igniter and remove it from the stove or insert. While you are taking the igniter out, verify that it is installed correctly with the correct mounting equipment, screws, etc.. With the igniter removed from the stove, you will need to look over the part to find the rated watts, it’s usually stamped on the metal somewhere. If you cannot find it, look on our website for the correct igniter; the information you are looking for will be under “technical specs”

If your Ohms reading is within 10%, more or less than the rating (46Ω +/- 10%), it’s good. If the igniter has a “contained short” or a short within itself and not grounding out, your Ohms reading will be very low...usually in the single digits. Generally, you cannot have a faulty igniter with too high of a resistance reading unless an igniter is installed that is way out of spec. An example of this would be your stove requires a 300W igniter but the stove has a 250W igniter installed. The reading in this scenario would be 52Ω. The reading would be correct to the igniter but would be the wrong value for the specified 300W igniter. That’s why it’s usually good to look at the part itself for the watts rating.
